Shanghai Academy of International Standardization for Traditional Chinese Medicine (SAIS-TCM) is an affiliated academy of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, established in September 2022. SAIS-TCM is primarily responsible for building and promoting TCM standardization platforms both in China and abroad; conducting research and providing advisory services on TCM international standardization and related strategic decision-making; and researching and developing quality standards for Chinese materia medica (CMM).
SAIS-TCM encompasses several international platforms, including the Secretariat of ISO/TC 249 Traditional Medicine and the Center for International Classification Research on Traditional Medicine Clinical Conditions and Service Evaluation of World Health Organization (WHO). It also serves as the Secretariat of Committee of Standardization Construction of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS), the Secretariat of Shanghai Technical Committee for Standardization of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the SHANGHAI STANDARD Technical Committee for Evaluation (Health Sector), and the Shanghai Technical Committee for Standardization of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Experts from SAIS-TCM contribute to local and national strategic decision-making and advisory services on TCM internationalization and standardization by serving on the Expert Advisory Committee for Internationalization of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and as standardization experts for Shanghai.
Since 2009, the research teams have been actively advancing TCM standardization in various sectors, including the research, development, and revision of ISO standards; studies on TCM standardization strategies and systems; WHO International Classification of Diseases (ICD) research; evaluation of WHO traditional medicine services; CMM analysis and quality standard research; studies on CMM pharmacodynamic materials; development and revision of domestic CMM standards at all levels; standardization research in the Health sector; and research on world traditional medicine.
To date, SAIS-TCM has managed and published over one hundred international TCM standards. The 11th Edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), which includes chapters on traditional medicine compiled by SAIS-TCM experts on behalf of the Chinese delegation, was successfully approved at the 72nd World Health Assembly (WHA). This marks a milestone in integrating traditional medicine into the global mainstream healthcare system. The achievements of SAIS-TCM in promoting TCM international standardization have received significant endorsements from multiple national leaders and have been repeatedly recognized in the top ten annual news items for the development of TCM in China.
