Training Base for TCM MTI Graduates at Secretariat of ISO/TC 249

Over the past ten years since 2015 when the Master of Translation and Interpretation (MTI) Program was established at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Secretariat of ISO/TC 249 has been serving as a translation training base for the MTI graduates and provided internship opportunities for more than 30 MTI graduates. Every year, the Secretariat of ISO/TC 249 has 2 to 3 grand international conferences and more than 10 medium-and-small-scaled exchanging activities on foreign affairs, providing an ideal platform for the MTI graduates to practice their translation and interpretation skills. In addition, the training base has also sponsored 17 MTI graduates to have 2-month exchange studies at L-Università ta' Malta (University of Malta). 

The MTI graduates practicing at the Secretariat of ISO/TC 249 will primarily conduct the following tasks: Researching and tracking the current situation of the international standardization for Traditional Chinese Medicine; Mastering the accurate expressions for the formulation of ISO international standards in both Chinese and English, as well as the tips of mastering such bi-lingual expressions, and; Learning about and analyzing the current situation of the adoption of all levels and categories of national and international standards on the terms and expressions concerning Traditional Chinese Medicine. Further, the training base also arranges for the MTI graduates to participate in formulating specific international standards and attend the meetings held by various working panels based on the international standardization platform for Traditional Chinese Medicine in line with the individual conditions of the MTI graduates. 

Instructors serving at the training base are veterans with extensive experience in the international standardization for Traditional Chinese Medicine and senior contributors to the management of ISO and WHO international organizations as well as the formulation and revision of international standards. Most Instructors are professionals with multi-discipline backgrounds in foreign languages, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and standardization, etc. They are not only the masters in international standardization, but also excellent team members with professional teaching experience. Instructors always provide helpful guidance and assistance to the trainees based on their extensive practical experience in international standardization for Traditional Chinese Medicine. 

Up to now, the MTI graduates trained at the training base have published more than 10 papers on the translation topics concerning Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as the international standardization for Traditional Chinese Medicine. In addition, they have been awarded with several honorary prizes, such as the National Scholarship for Graduates of China, the Second Prize of the National English Contest for College Students (Category A), the Third Prize of the “Zhi Xing Cup” Social Practice Contest for College Students of Shanghai, the Honorary Title of “Excellent Graduate of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine”, the Honorary Title of “Excellent Student of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine”, the First Prize of the English Contest on Traditional Chinese Medicine of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and so on.
